OBITUARY:
Courier (microfilm), Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA newspaper, PA
State Library - Veteran Merchant Has Passed Away.
August Stickel, Sr., Dies Suddenly Early This Morning.
Had Been Ill For Months. But Condition Recently Had Not Been Alarming -
For Many Years Mr. Stickel Kept Stores at Mill Run and Other Mountain Points.
While conversing with his wife, August Stickel, Sr., a prominent retired business man of Mill Run and widely known in Connellsville, died suddenly this morning at 1:30 o'clock at the house of his son, August Stickel, Jr., No. 547
Chestnut street. After taking his medicine Mr. Stickel talked to his wife and during the conversation he spoke of what he would like to have for his dinner today. While he had been in poor health for the past two years his death was unexpected by the members of his family. Up until two years ago Mr. Stickel enjoyed excellent health, never having been sick a day in his life. During his illness he was able to be about the greater part of the time. Last Summer he
spent five months at the Cambridge Springs for the benefit of his health and the best of medical attention was given him but with no avail. His stay at the Springs prolonged his life. Yesterday he seemed to be no worse and on retiring for the night he made no mention of feeling badly. Two months ago Mr. Stickel
and his wife came to Connellsville to spend the remainder of the winter with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. August Stickel, Jr. Since coming to Connellsville he had been confined to the house. Mr. Stickel was aged 58 years. He was born in Germany
Mr. Stickel was a Democrat all his life and at various times held different offices in Springfield township. He always took a great interest in politics and to the people of Mill Run and vicinity he was always a reliable adviser and was willing to lend his assistance to any of his numerous friends. He had been a member of the German Lutheran Church for many years and as long as his health would permit he would come to Connellsville to attend the services of his church.
Deceased was the father of seven children, all of whom survive. They are F.W. Stickel, of the A. Stickel & Company; Mrs. C.W. Gernet of Pittsburg; Mrs. Walker, wife of Dr. J. Allison Walker of Hecla, Pa.; A.C. Stickel, Jr., of
Connellsville; Milton Stickel, Mill Run; Otto Stickel, Connellsville, and Charles Stickel, a student at the Carnegie Technical School at Pittsburg. He is also survived by his widow and 11 grandchildren, and one half brother, Dr.
William Stickel of Germany. No arrangements have as yet been made for the funeral.
Follow-up article, Monday, 13 Feb 1911, pg. 3, stated that it was am impressive funeral. The pallbearers all rode white horses. Interment in Indian Creek Cemetery.
