Harriet M. Kissling, 90, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center, died Thursday, July 08, 2004, at the care center, following a lingering illness. Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Julie Anderson Schuett. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Worcester and husband Rick of Anamosa; her son, Carl Kissling and wife Cheryl of Toddville; six grandchildren, Sara Kissling and J.W. Kissling, both of Toddville, Josh Kissling of Carol Stream, Illinois, Hannah Lydon and husband Charles of Belchertown, Massachusetts, and Kelsey and Noah Worcester, both of Anamosa; one great-grandson, Cuinn Lydon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; two infant daughters; and three brothers, Jackson, Nelson and Robert.
Harriet was born June 3, 1914, the daughter of Harley and Mary Jane (Hunter) Cook in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from the Old Washington High School (downtown) in 1931 and from Coe College in 1935 with a BA degree. Harriet taught 3rd-7th grade at Muddy School on Blairs Ferry Rd. and later transferred to Toddville where she taught Business Arithmetic, then high school at Palo. On June 28, 1939, she married Clarence Kissling. They farmed east of Springville, then moved to a farm NE of Marion in 1946. They moved to Marion in 1979. Clarence passed away on March 3, 1987. Harriet then moved to Garnett Place in 1997 and became a resident of Linn Manor Care Center on February 4, 1998.
Harriet was a dear mother and treasured her entire family and friends. She was a very unselfish person, always putting others first. She portrayed a life for the Lord by her caring, giving, and loving ways.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Harriet's memory may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 802 12th Street, Marion, Iowa 52302 for the Camp Wyoming Scholarship Fund.
Obituary for husband was in "The Cedar Rapids Gazette" Thurs, March 5, 1987. It reads:
Clarence J. Kissling 74, of 2550 17th Ave. Marion, died Tuesday afternoon in St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
Born Nov. 9 1912 at Monticello, he married Harriet Cook on June 28, 1939, at Marion. Mr. Kissling farmed in the Springville-Marion are all of his life.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Carl of Toddville; a daughter, Janet Worcester of Marion; a sister, Edna Galbraith of Countryside, Ill; and five grandchildren.
Services: 10am Friday, Baxter Memorial Chapel in Marion, by the Revs. Jay Miller and Tom Fogle. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, Ia. Friends may call at the chapel from 2 to 7pm. today or from 8:30 until 9:50 a.m. Friday, when the casket will be closed. Memorial contributions may be made to the new St. Luke's Hospital Intensive Care Unit, 1026 A Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids 52402 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
