Comments: The earliest Stickles in what is now Sussex County, New Jersey was perhaps Zachariah Stickles b. c. 1723 who received $9.30 on 30 Apr 1781 for providing services of a two-horse team for 3 ½ days during the American Revolution (certificate 546). No Stickles appear in the 1773 or 1774 tax lists of Sussex County.

Zachariah Stickles, Sr. and Zachariah Stickles, Jr., purchased 193 acres, each with a half interest, in what is now the present township of Andover from John Armstrong, 25 May 1790 (deed recorded in 1823 at X2:318). This land and the interests and rights of the descendants proves to be very important in identifying the various members of the Stickles family. Zachariah and his family resided in Newton township (that portion that later became Andover township). Zachariah Sr., d. 19 Nov 1797 74y intestate, inventory of his estate dated 16 Dec 1797. His marker of native stone and roughly inscribed is in the Huntsville Cemetery, Green Township and reads:

HERE LIES BODY OF ZACARIAH STICKLE HIS AGE IS 74 HE DIED THE 19 OF NOVEMBER IN THE YEAR OF 1797

His name is inscribed Zacariah. Two native stone markers, one inscribed 1802 and the other 1803 are near Zachariah’s marker. No other information is on these markers. Other Stickles family members with inscribed markers are buried near Zachariah in three rows. There are native stone markers and graves without markers in between Stickles markers indicating several family members without inscribed markers.

Administratrix was Elizabeth Stickles and fellowbondsmen were Andrew Stickle and Peter Snook, all of Newton. Elizabeth was evidently his widow, but it is unknown if she was the mother of his children. She was perhaps the Elizabeth Bale who m. 29 Aug 1784 Zachariah Stickles and daughter of Johan Heinrich Behl and Elizabeth Gunderman (Gonterman, etc.) of Layfayette, Sussex County or Zachariah Jr.

If the Elizabeth in the Will was Elizabeth Bale she was b. perhaps in the 1760’s and could not be the mother of the elder Zachariah’s children.

It is also possible that, Zachariah Jr., (child of Zachariah, Sr.) was twice married, first to Elizabeth Bale and then to Margaret.
