A Benedik Stekle, his wife, and 5 ch., were on Capt. Thomas Key's ship in Holland in the 5th party of 1709 (Rotterdam Lists): he is a likely candidate to be the ancestor of the Duchess Co. group of Stickles. Ref: The Palatine Families of NY, Henry Z. Jones
Nicolaus Stickel was nat. as Niccolas Stickling 14 Feb 1715/16 (Albany Nats.). He first appeared on tax rolls in the Rhinebeck region in 1739/40 (Dutchess Co. Tax Lists). Nicolas Stickell was one of the Elders and Deacons of the High Dutch Ref. Protestant Church of Rhinebeck in Dec 1747 (Smith's History of Rhinebeck, p. 93). The will of Nicholas Stickel was dated 21 Jan 1788 and probated 10 Feb 1790 (Dutchess Co. Will Bk.A). Nicolaus md. Anna Margaretha Drom (Trom/Drum), and then md. 2nd Sarah------- (will). (The children appear to have been to his first wife, BJS) Ref: The Palatine Families of New York.
