During World War II there was a severe labor shortage as all the men left to serve in the military. This opened new job opportunities open to enterprising women, and in September 1942 Tommy wrote to her mother to tell her that she would be pumping gas at Tedo's service station -- doubling her previous salary to $35 a week, with an added penny for each gallon she pumped. This is a picture of her on the job, complete with the change-maker that was standard for service station workers, 'back in the day.' [Picture thanks to Jean Ridgeway Gibson.]
